Who we are

We are a family business based in Trentino, on the Pinè plateau,
east of the Adige Valley in Trentino, an area that has always been dedicated to the cultivation of small fruits. More than three decades of experience in Rubus propagation make Berryplant a synonym for quality in the world of berries.
We are dedicated to providing excellent plant material for specialised growers, putting the quality of our product at the centre of our mission.

QUALITY IS OUR SIGNATURE

Always excellence for your blackberry and raspberry plants.

We have become synonymous with quality because we firmly believe that this is the real key to success in any project.

Our story

For 30 years, we have been cultivating the best varieties of blackberries and raspberries

EARLY 70s

The Beginnings of berries Cultivation

In Trentino, the first small fruit crops, particularly raspberries and strawberries, began to be cultivated…

Until then, the fruit harvested was mainly wild, picked in the woods following natural rhythms. Initially, plant propagation was done by uprooting and replanting shoots taken from the fields. However, this approach led to an increasing spread of viral diseases, especially in raspberries, causing significant economic problems.

THE 80s

The Path to Specialization

In the 1980s, Maria Maddalena Grisenti (affectionately known as Marilena) began her journey in plant propagation, initially in small greenhouses…

The goal was clear: to obtain healthier plants and avoid issues related to viral and bacterial diseases through controlled production. In 1984-1985, in response to market demands and an urgency recognized at the institutional level, the first virus-free certified plants were imported (initially from abroad), the result of innovative cutting techniques. From that moment, Marilena progressively consolidated her experience in producing raspberry seedlings using material from certified mother plants, periodically renewed, and increasingly specializing in propagation by cuttings.

2000S

Growth and Diversification

Propagation techniques require suitable structures to support the growth of the company…

Thus, in 2004-2005, greenhouses and related structures were built in Loc. Meie, on the Pinè Plateau, which still constitute the main headquarters of Berryplant. Thanks to the new structure, Maria Maddalena began producing seedlings of other species such as Rubus fruticosus (blackberry), strawberries, currants, and blueberries. However, raspberries remained the main crop on which her company focused its efforts, allowing it to establish itself in the European and international markets of specialized growers.

2005 – Berryplant is Born
Berryplant established itself as a fully-fledged company. During this period, Maria Maddalena continued to consolidate her experience in propagating Rubus, with particular attention to raspberries and blackberries. The constant commitment to ensuring the highest product quality and customer satisfaction led Berryplant to invest more and more in research, as well as in its own breeding program, aimed at selecting new raspberry and blackberry varieties. The first protected and patented raspberry varieties, such as Amira and Regina, represented a significant step in those years, combining the best qualities of the well-known “Polka” and “Tulameen”: they were the result of the pioneering work of Ilario Ioriatti, one of the first in Europe to undertake a private breeding program.

2008 – Expansion
The first increase in the company’s area occurred with a dedicated structure for raspberry rooting to increase production capacity.

2016 - 2019

Development and Expansion

Berryplant reached a new milestone with the opening of its own certified mother plant nursery located in Levico Terme (TN)

This step allowed the company to produce its own certified mother plants autonomously, ensuring total control over the quality and traceability of its plants.

2017 – Continued Growth
The company continued to grow and invest in its main structure in Baselga di Piné. This expansion of the facilities highlighted the constant commitment to providing optimal spaces and resources to ensure the highest quality of plants and services to its customers, both technical and logistical.

2019 – The New Micropropagation Laboratory
In 2019, Berryplant introduced a micropropagation laboratory, which became commercially operational in 2021. This laboratory is dedicated to the in vitro production of blackberry seedlings, representing an innovative step that partly replaces the traditional production of semi-woody cuttings. Also in 2019, Berryplant proudly announced the birth of Berrytech, a company dedicated to research and development with its own breeding & IP Management program.

2019 - TODAY

Innovation and Progress

An internal experimental field dedicated to advanced selections was inaugurated. This field represents a crucial research center for Berrytech’s activities and programs.

2021: A Pre-Multiplication and Conservation Center for Prebase Materials
In 2021, Berryplant inaugurated its Pre-Multiplication and Conservation Center for Prebase Materials. It is one of four conservation and pre-multiplication centers in Europe, but it is the only privately owned one, located within the company’s structures. This center represents a significant step in ensuring the quality and authenticity of propagative material. It allows Berryplant to boast complete control over the certification of propagation material, working closely with control authorities. The company can now produce its own certified mother plants and exchange prebase material with a vast network of affiliated centers worldwide.

2022: The New Warehouse with Cold Storage
This expansion represents an important step forward in the company’s management and logistics. The new cold storage facilities allow for greater autonomy in preserving and storing plant materials, as well as increased logistical efficiency and customer service.

2023 – INNOVATION AND PROGRESS
In 2023, Berryplant further increased the area of the certified mother plant nursery. Additionally, to further improve our production processes, we implemented the use of robots for specialized operations and some processing phases.

PRESENT AND FUTURE

At Berryplant, the pursuit of quality is never a destination but a continuously evolving journey. We continue to innovate, explore new horizons, and strive for excellence in small fruit plant propagation. Our dedication to quality is the key to our success, and this quest never stops. We look to the future with a clear goal: to help shape a sustainable tomorrow, one plant at a time. Sustainability is at the heart of our present and future actions: we are currently transitioning to a 100% electric vehicle fleet, but not only that… The future of Berryplant is a future where quality, vision, and sustainability are the true drivers of everything we do.
